9malls.com review of Half.com written 02-03-07

Web site:
http://www.Half.com

Company History:

In the blog Valleywag.com it states that one year before eBay bought Half.com, "Half.com paid the town of Halfway, Oregon, to rename itself and become the world's first dot-com city (
Valleywag.com)." The official site description of Half.com featured on Alexa.com is "Buy and sell previously owned CDs, DVDs, books, and video games." eBay.com bought Half.com on June 13th of 2000 for $312.8 million in stock. At the time of purchase eBay's stock rose from $1.1875 to $68 (http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=940DE2DE133EF937A25755C0A9669C8B63). I was looking at an archived page of Half.com on web.archive.org for the year 2000. The old fee charges Half.com imposed was a flat 15% on the final sale price. So with the Half.com sliding scale it's now actually cheaper to sell on Half.com as it used to be.

Review:

The way I see it why would one shop Half.com when they could shop eBay.com and save even more. I would first check eBay for the product you are looking for and if you can't find it search Half.com.

Half.com Fees Compared with eBay.com:

Half.com Fees

The Half.com fee structure as of 02-03-2007 is less than $50.00 it's 15.0%, $50.01 - $100.00 12.5%, $100.01 - $250.00 10.0%, $250.01 - $500.00 7.5%, and finally greater than $500.00 it's 5.0%.

eBay.com Fees

Compare with the eBay final value fee structure of "Item not sold = no fee, $0.01 - $25.00 5.25% of the closing value, $25.01 - $1,000.00, 5.25% of the initial $25.00 ($1.31), plus 3.25% of the remaining closing value balance ($25.01 to $1,000.00), equal to or over $1000.01, 5.25% of the initial $25.00 ($1.31), plus 3.25% of the initial $25.01 - $1,000.00 ($31.69), plus 1.50% of the remaining closing value balance ($1000.01 - closing value)." eBay also has auction insertion fees. Please visit their web site for more eBay fee info. eBay.com has so many extra fees it's hard to keep track of all of them.
eBay fee structure. I was looking at an archived page for eBay.com is the year 2000 at web.archive.org. The old final value fee structure for eBay was 5% of the amount up to $25 $01.25, 2.5% from $25.01 up to $1,000, and 1.25% of the balance over $1,000.01. So as you can see eBay prices have gone up a bit. eBay 2000 fee structure.

PayPal.com Fees

If you use Payal for your eBay or Half.com auction you pay even more fees. Here is the PayPal fee structure taken from the web site. Monthly Sales Price Per Transaction $0.00 USD-$3,000.00 USD 2.9% + $0.30 USD, $3,000.01 USD-$10,000.00 USD 2.5% + $0.30 USD, $10,000.01 USD-$100,000.00 USD 2.2% + $0.30 USD, and finally greater than $100,000.00 USD it's 1.9% + $0.30 USD.
PayPal fee structure. Just to compare this to Google Checkout. Here are Google's fees: 2% + $0.20 per transaction. If you use Google AdWords it's free up to 10 times your monthly AdWords spend. I think competition is good thing because the fees taken out without it would increase even more every year.

Fees, Fees, Fees!

Positives:

Unlike eBay there are no fees to list on Half.com rather Half takes a cut of the final purchase price.
